Important News

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been calling prescription drug abuse an epidemic and among this epidemic, consumers are questioning what to do with their unused, unwanted and expired medications. Starting on March 28, 2013, Hy-Vee is answering that question. Anyone in the Omaha area is now able to get rid of certain unused or expired prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications. To take back these medications, visit a Hy-Vee in the metro area, walk back to the pharmacy, and request disposal for the Take Back box. Because of the contamination being found in our water system from flushing medications, the boxes will be sealed, sent to a disposal site, and incinerated. Controlled medications, such as narcotics, depressants and stimulants, will not be accepted. Those drugs will, however, be accepted at the National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27 and the list of locations will be available on the DEA’s website, www.dea.gov, early in April.

There are two walk-in Urgent Care facilities available to the UNO community. They will bill your health insurance if you take the insurance card.

Rockbrook Urgent Care located at 108th and Center is a walk-in doctor's office. It is open 7 days a week. Their hours are 8 am to 8 pm, Monday through Saturday. On Sunday they are open from 10 am to 6 pm. They have physicians who can order x-rays, put in stitches and assist with treatment for illnesses.

Peony Park Hy-Vee on Cass Street has a Nurse Practitioner in the Pharmacy who can assist UNO students that require medical care after Health Services is closed. Hy-Vee does not have an x-ray.

The closest Emergency Room is Methodist Hospital at 8303 Dodge Street and Nebraska Medical Center at 42nd and Emilie.

Immunization Requirements

Appointment Services

To reduce waiting time for non-urgent problems, students should call for an appointment.

If students are unable to keep their appointment, a phone call should be made and their appointment should be cancelled. The space could be given to another student, as spaces are limited.

It is helpful to remember that UNO Health Services has only one physician at any given time. This means the scheduled time may be backed up for an emergency.

During the times a physician or nurse practicioner is not available, a nurse will evaluate the student. A nurse will either provide the care or arrangements will be made for the student to see a physician or nurse practitioner at a time determined by the urgency of both the student's condition and the condition of other patients requiring treatment.

Referrals

Just like a family physician, at times it is necessary to refer students to an outside specialist. The health fee does not cover outside specialists. Any cost incurred from the referrals is the student's responsibility.

Medical Excuses

Health Services DOES NOT issue routine medical excuses. Verification may be provided that a student was seen in Health Services; however, this is not proof that the student was too ill to participate in classroom activities.

Health Fees

Health Services is available to all currently enrolled students regardless of insurance coverage. Costs are included in the comprehensive University Program and Facilities Fee (UPFF).

Students may see the Health Services providers for free. They can receive any in-stock over-the-counter medication at no cost.

Students will be billed for x-rays, outside reference laboratory tests, prescription medications, required and requested immunizations and vaccines, and any services delivered off of the UNO campus.

Many Omaha-area pharmacies give a discount to students with a valid UNO student ID card.

Health Insurance

UNO Health Services will gladly bill your services the following health insurance partners:
  • BCBS of Nebraska
  • UHC United Health Care
  • Aetna
  • Midlands Choice
  • Coventry

Over-the-Counter Medication

A variety of medications are available free of charge to students. They are for treating common problems such as headaches, cold & flu, or diarrhea.
